Cambridge Sgt. Crowley speaks at police convention
Crowley, who is white, sparked a national debate on race relations when he arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. for disorderly conduct at his home in Cambridge, Mass. Gates is black.
More than 3,000 police officers gave Crowley a standing ovation when he spoke at the Long Beach Convention Center and dozens left their seats to flash snapshots of him.
But Crowley spoke for only a few minutes to thank the officers for their support after the July 16 arrest.
President Barack Obama later said on national TV that Crowley had "acted stupidly," then held a White House beer summit to bring
all three men together.
